Working with experimental artists Worm Moon and bioPrism was a perfect fit for the Day Zero Sequence that formed one section of dementia lyrics. The five poems in this section explore the metamorphic/metaphoric movement of water as brain, as body, as aquifer all with their particular forms of breakdown and dementia. This was a way to open and extend the content of the book and link the speaker’s feelings of loss in that micro world of friendships to the broader macro world that is breaking down on multiple levels and has been a concern of mine through my last three books.

Working with bioPrism on the remaining three poems in this section was also a wonderful fit. Their work is so aligned with my own feelings about environmental decay that getting them involved was a no brainer. They work with a broader ambient/electronic palette embracing noise and dissonance but without ever losing their lyrical feel for sound and how it can shape a wide spectrum of emotions. We worked on three poems together, “Pedal Steel Death Song” “Aqua America” and “Aquifer Manifesto,” all with varying sound designs and instrumentations that listen to and enrich the phrasing and flow of ideas in each on of the poems. It’s been an honor and delight to work with these exceptional local artists. Their work, their commitment to community and friendship both inspire and challenge me to continue taking risks as we all make art out of these interesting, often terrifying, times.
